Background:

St Mary's has served the ancient parish of Amersham and Coleshill since 1873. The Victorian ecclesiastical style of building, made of local brick, has been extended and modified on a number of occasions to keep pace with educational developments and the growing population, including an environmental area made by pupils. St Mary's maintains regular links with the diocesean offices and a very close relationship with St Mary's Church. The church buildings are often used for worship, RE and musical productions and the rector takes weekly assemblies. St Mary's 'nurtures an outward-looking perspective among pupils' through community competitions and links with outside organisations. In 2000 it was the only school to shadow the Carnegie and Kate Greenaway book awards where Years 3 and 6 were interviewed by newspapers and BBC television, and Year 6 was involved in a year's pilot of the council's road safety and health document 'Step by Step'. In the same year, 20 poems by pupils were selected for the WH Smiths Poetry Award book and a design for a 'millennium landmark' won third prize and publication in Building magazine. St Mary's Amersham supports the Commonwealth Teachers Exchange Programme and this has resulted in eight exchanges with Australian teachers in the past decade. The school is currently over-subscribed.
