Background:

Developed from original Victorian building, built around 1851; in the 1960s, an extension was built and now contains four classrooms, a special needs room and a 'Quiet Room' used by the reception class; in the 1970s, further changes took place when the school was expanding. A school hall with kitchen, toilets and cloakrooms was built as well as a school office and staffroom; also four octagonal classrooms and a small library built around a shared practical area. The library was later converted to a staffroom, and the staffroom became the headteacher's office. The kitchen, off the school hall, was later converted to a technology room. Due to the popularity of the school and a projected increase in numbers, a further two classrooms have been built; also a room to house the library. St John's has extensive playing fields to the rear of the school and also shares the facilities of the local sports club, sited next to the school grounds, for the coaching of cricket and tennis. Parental involvement in all areas of school life is actively encouraged. Wide choice of extra-curricular activities; involvement in the local community.
