Background:
The school first opened in 1964 as a county junior school and is now a self-governing foundation school. It occupies modern split-level buildings on a large, steeply sloping site to the east of High Wycombe, and offers spacious grounds with views over the Wye Valley. Although it is located in an urban area, the school boasts 'a large sports field, a delightful terrace bordered with shrubs, mixed woodland, an environmental area that has been allowed to develop naturally and a wildlife pond'. Many of the pupils come from homes where English is not the first language and the school receives central government funding to support their learning. An above average number of pupils are on the register of special education needs. A variety of extra curricular activities are offered including choir, gardening, recorders, environmental studies and cross country. The school raises funds for charities such as Barnados. Beechview aims to 'provide an environment where children can develop their confidence and self respect and to encourage them to take responsibilty for themselves and their actions'.
