Background:
The school was opened in 1956 on an 'extensive' site in a village midway between Amersham and Aylesbury, and 10 miles from High Wycombe. It attracts pupils from up to 35 primary schools, from a wide area including rural and small farm communities. The Misbourne is situated in a part of the county that is selective at 12, and in the immediate area, well over 40% of pupils are selected for grammar school. It now finds itself over-subscribed, with two applications per place. A large-scale building programme began in 1998 to cope with growing numbers. Pupils are offered a high quality of learning support, and the school houses a fully-integrated department for pupils with moderate learning difficulties. The school is also proud of the 'distinctive' character of its sixth-form. 'The school provides a full range of broad and balanced opportunities for its pupils to succeed and places a firm emphasis on re-establishing self-confidence in pupils (and their families) who are disappointed (initially) that they were not selected for a grammar school'.
