Background:
This rural school was founded in the 1860s, and its original Victorian building houses a nursery class. The modern section of the school was built in 1969. Great Horwood is surrounded by countryside and the students use the school's own hockey and football pitches. Part of the grounds are used as a conservation area with a pond, wild flower area, over 200 trees, bird boxes and animal habitats. It is the smallest combined school in the area, yet competes regularly in sports such as netball, hockey, rounders, cross-country, athletics, swimming and Kwik cricket. As part of the school's Church of England status, there is regular events in church and priests visit the school often. Great Horwood's Parent-Teacher Association is 'strong' in raising money for school development and the adventure playground. It has worked with local groups such as the Scoutes and the guides in fundraising for such events as the village bonfire and fireworks. After-school clubs include the school choir and small orchestra, and Great Horwood puts on plays involving the whole school.
