Background:
Established in 1962 after co-educational Dr Challoner's Grammar School, founded in 1624, became two single-sex schools; it maintains close ties with boys' grammar school, with which it shares many activities. Sited in wooded surroundings on outskirts of Little Chalfont, near Amersham; buildings extended and adapted in recent years; additions include extensive languages and music areas, four new science laboratories, redesigned art suite; new sports hall opened in 2002. Extra-curricular activities are particular feature, with music, sport and drama 'especially strong': orchestra, string orchestra, woodwind ensemble, swing band, three choirs, recorder group, the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, computing, Christian Union, public-speaking. In 2005, representative teams have competed nationally in gymnastics, netball, athletics and basketball; regionally, the school achieves success in these sports as well cricket, swimming, rugby, football, rowing and tennis. Well-established work-experience scheme supports careers guidance; also provides personal, social and health education programme. Specialist sports and language college status. Over-subscribed, with more than four applications per place. Artsmark Gold (2004); Sportsmark Gold (2003). Ethos: 'We aim high in all that we do - in our work, our relationships, our friendships, our care and our aspirations. We also aim to enjoy what we do, both in our work and leisure activities at school. We are a strong school becoming stronger'.
